Other feeding options
You may have a medical reason (such as taking a prescription medication that’s unsafe with breastfeeding) or a social reason for not choosing to breastfeed your baby. In these cases, there are a number of options you can discuss with your healthcare provider or pediatrician to make the best feeding choice for your baby.
Options you may want to discuss include:
- Initially breastfeeding for as long as possible and then transitioning to formula
- Combining nursing and formula feeding, such as having a caregiver feed formula during the day and nursing once you’re home from work
- Choosing the best formula for your baby, such as a transitional formula for babies ages 4 to 12 months old, or one with iron to prevent anemia
