What causes preeclampsia remains unknown; there’s no sure way to prevent it. Several prevention strategies have been tested but none have worked for all women. Low dose aspirin may help some women at high risk (talk to your healthcare provider about this prior to taking aspirin, which otherwise should not be taken in pregnancy). Calcium has been studied and may help some women. Contrary to popular belief, bed rest doesn’t help prevent or treat preeclampsia. Exercise may also help, especially if started before and continued during pregnancy
