Understanding Colic

Experts treat colic as a gastrointestinal problem even though research has failed to link the two. Now a study of moms with migraines is showing that their babies are twice as likely to have colic, say neurologists at the University of California, San Francisco.

This means babies who appear colicky may need to have reduced lighting and stimulation, which can relieve migraine pain. This is important because excessive crying is the leading trigger for shaken baby syndrome.

“If we can understand what is making the babies cry, we may be able to protect them from this very dangerous outcome,” said Amy Gelfand, MD, a child neurologist at UCSF.
